GST ARN Status — How To Check It and What Each Status Means
An ARN is the fifteen-character Application Reference Number issued the moment your GST application is submitted. It is how you track the application, and it is the only thing we need to look at a file someone else opened.
The status wording on the portal is terse and causes a lot of unnecessary alarm. Here is what each one actually means, and which of them require you to do something.
How it works
Send us the notice or the ARN
A screenshot of the REG-03 notice, or just the ARN. We read what the officer actually objected to, which is rarely what the portal summary suggests.
We tell you which route applies
Reply to the notice, re-file fresh, or appeal. These have different deadlines and picking the wrong one costs you the others.
We prepare and file the response
The clarification reply with corrected documents, filed inside the seven-day window.
We track it to the order
Daily follow-up until the GSTIN is issued or a written order explains why not.
What you’ll receive
- A reading of what your current status actually means
- Whether the ball is with you or with the department
- The clarification reply drafted and filed if one is due
- Daily tracking until an order is passed
- A fresh application where the reply window has already closed
- A GST invoice for our fee
How to check GST ARN status on the portal
Go to gst.gov.in, open Services, then Track Application Status, and enter the ARN. You do not need to log in, which matters when the application was filed by a consultant whose credentials you never had.
The ARN is fifteen characters and was emailed to you the moment the application was submitted. If you cannot find it, it can also be retrieved against the PAN used on the application.
GST ARN status meaning: every status explained
"Pending for Processing" means the application is with the officer and nothing is required from you. "Site Verification Assigned" or "Site Verification Completed" means physical verification of your premises is under way.
"Pending for Clarification" means a REG-03 notice has been issued and your seven-day reply window is running. "Clarification filed — Pending for Order" means you replied and the officer is deciding. "Clarification not filed — Pending for Order" means the window closed without a reply, and a rejection order is the likely next step.
ARN pending for processing for more than a week
Inside seven working days this is normal and there is nothing to do. Beyond about ten, it is worth checking that no notice was issued to an email address you are not monitoring — the single most common cause of an application that appears frozen.
Applications filed without Aadhaar authentication sit in this state longest, because they are queued for physical verification rather than desk approval.
GST registration status site verification: what happens next
An officer visits the address on the application. They are checking that the premises exist, that they match what you documented, and that the business is genuinely operating from there.
Have the utility bill, the rent agreement or ownership proof, and someone who can speak for the business present. Verifications more often fail because the visit found nobody than because anything was actually wrong.
ARN number format and what the characters mean
Fifteen characters: two alphabetic, followed by the state code, then the month and year of filing, then a system-generated sequence and a check digit. It is generated at submission, before any decision is made.
An ARN is therefore not evidence of approval. Marketplaces and banks that ask for a GSTIN will not accept an ARN in its place, which surprises sellers who assume submission was the finish line.
Tracking an ARN when a consultant filed the application
Track Application Status works on the ARN alone, without credentials. So even where a consultant holds the login and has stopped replying, you can see exactly where the file stands.
What you cannot do without the login is file the clarification reply. That is the point at which people usually need someone to take the application over, and it can be done with a fresh authorisation.
Everything included
- ARN status diagnosis, including applications filed by someone else
- REG-03 notice review where one has been issued
- Clarification reply (REG-04) drafted and filed inside the window
- Document remediation where the objection is documentary
- Escalation guidance where the application has genuinely stalled
- Fresh REG-01 filing where that is the faster route
Who orders this most often
Applications sitting unchanged for two weeks
Past about ten working days without movement, something is usually wrong rather than slow.
Anyone who cannot read their status
"Clarification not filed — Pending for Order" means something very specific and urgent.
Sellers with a blocked marketplace account
Every day without the GSTIN is a day the seller account stays inactive.
People whose consultant has the login
We can work from the ARN alone if you have lost contact with whoever filed it.
The honest bit about how long it really takes
Three to seven working days is the normal range for an Aadhaar-authenticated application with clean documents. Applications routed to physical verification take considerably longer, and that is the department's timeline rather than anything a consultant can compress.
Nobody can make an officer act faster. What we can do is make sure nothing is sitting with you unanswered, because the majority of applications that look stuck are actually waiting on a clarification the applicant never saw.

Frequently asked
How do I check my GST ARN status?+
gst.gov.in → Services → Track Application Status, and enter the ARN. No login is needed, which matters if a consultant filed on your behalf.
What does 'Pending for Processing' mean?+
The application is with the officer and nothing is required from you. Inside seven working days this is entirely normal.
What does 'Pending for Clarification' mean?+
A REG-03 notice has been issued and your seven-working-day reply window is running. This one requires action from you, quickly.
What does 'Clarification not filed — Pending for Order' mean?+
The reply window closed without a response, and a rejection order is the likely next step. A fresh application is usually the fastest route from here.
How long should an ARN take?+
Three to seven working days for an Aadhaar-authenticated application with clean documents. Applications routed to physical verification take considerably longer.
Can I use my ARN instead of a GSTIN?+
No. An ARN only confirms the application was submitted. Marketplaces and banks require the issued GSTIN, which is why submission is not the finish line.
Can you help if my consultant has the login?+
Yes. Status can be tracked on the ARN alone, and we can take the application over with a fresh authorisation to file the reply.
